Schuenemeyer: proper noun

Pronounced: Shoe-Nuh-meyer

or, from my cousin, Mel Ingram,

“There is more than one pronunciation just as there are different spellings. The original German spelling was Schunemeyer with an umlaut above the “u”. This would be be pronounced as a short vowel “u” like the word “wood”. The Claus Hinrich Schunemeyer branch kept the Schunemeyer spelling without the umlaut and I believe they pronounce it Shoe-na-meyer. However, the Johann Heinrich Schunemeyer branch changed the spelling to Schuenemeyer when they immigrated which is the common conversion of the umlaut “u” and most members of that branch pronounce it Shen-a-meyer. So there is at least three different pronunciations.”

    I just wanted to thank you for setting up this website!! It’s great and I can’t wait to read more about our family. It was good seeing you at the family reunion. Our turnout wasn’t that high, but those that attended seem to have a great time. The games set up by the Ingrams were alot of fun. The Ingram Family always did and do have a good time. They are so creative!! Let’s all look forward to this next year and to our 35th Family Reunion on July 25, 2009.
